Abstract The construction of Tianjin subway across Ziya river is the most difficult section of the No.1 line of the subway. The Ziya river is 6.0 m deep, and there are silt and clay on the riverbed. This paper introduces a safe, credible, no contaminative method-the horizontal freezing method. It describes the principle, feature, design essentials of the horizontal freezing method, as well as the matters which should be taken into attention in construction.
