Abstract：The paper puts forward an analysis on the influence factors for evaluating the quality grade of railway ballast,From the viewpoint of petrology,concerned with the limitation of rock prop?erties of existing ballast materials, the names of three main kinds of rocks which may be classified as I grade ballast or not are pointed out}as well as the names of the high-quality rocks distributed in China are proposed. Several steps and several suggestions are also proposed for engineering technicians concerned with how to select the superior-quality ballast and enlarging the selection scope of rock ma?terials.
