Abstract Based on the summary and analysis of a large amount of engineering practices and supervision informations on railway tunnels with expansive surrounding rock in home and abroad, the principles of design and construction and the construction methods for tunnels with expansive surrounding rock are proposed. Combined with the recent practical engineering projects, the countermeasures for constructing tunnels with expansive surrounding rock are introduced also in this paper.
