Abstract Combined with several engineering projects， the author analyzes problems liable to occur in the geological investigation and surveying of riverbanks in the loess area，which include the improper discrimination for collapsibility of loess because of the soil-borrowing in riverbanks， the discrimination errors for strata because of neglecting the mosaic objects， falling masses， river terrances and other geological phenomena in survey，as well as the subsequent design alternations and their resolutions-In this paper，the author sums up the experiences of practices in the loess area and lists the problems needed to be paid attention to in the geological investigation and surveying. They may be used also as reference for other projects in the similar area.
