Abstract Based the analyses o n the relativ e standards in home and abroad a nd the comparison wi th the ex perimental data, the paper propo ses the limiting bea ring capaci ty formulas w hich a re sui table for calculating the concrete and sto ne-fil led members under compressio n. The bea ring ca pacity of the bridg e pier a nd abutment may be calcula ted by these fo rmulas, and the fo rmulas may be used to revi se the desig n standards co ncerned wi th the bridg e subst ructures.
