Abstract The specialities of passenger flow for the urban rail transit system in China，as well as the empty and waste appearance of the train operation during the non-high passenger flow operating period，are analyzed. The feasibility of running "shortened train" with formation of less coaches has been proposed，and its economic benefits are explored.
