Abstract The paper gives a brief introduction for the background of the RAIL project which was approved by the EU in 1999 and the 50% of whose total value was funded by the EU. The paper discusses the safety and reliability, the RCM and its practical use, railway infrastructure, risk, etc., and expounds the importance of ensuring rail safety by improving the reliability of railway infrastructure machines.
