Abstract Abstract : Research purposes : Being a component of urban rail transit , modem tramcars have been showing up ai around the world. As the capital of Ethiopia , Addis Ababa has a large population , traffic jams and backward public transit facilities , thus urging the construction of urban rail transit with a large capacity. Although the modern tramcars made in China have already reached the advanced level of the world , crain improvements need to be made on the basis of ones running in China , so that the tramcars can meet all the special local topographic and climatic requirements. Research conclusions: (1) The tramcars made in China for Addis Ababa have advantages such as good pemomlance,a large passenger - capacity , high level of safety and comfort , impressive speed and convenience , efficiency on energy and low noise , flexibility in marshaling , being economical and practical. (2 ) As one type of moden plateau tramcar designed by China specially for Addis Ababa, all performance indices of it can meet the local topographic and climatic requirements. (3) The mooer tram transit in Addis Ababa , constructed with the aid of China , is the first urban rail transit among the regions of Easter and Sub - Saharan Africa. The successful operation of the tramcars designed for Addis Ababa will be a key to the door of African urban rail transit market , then paving a broad road for Chinese equipment to head towards Africa.
