Abstract：Up to the end of 1996, throug h unremit ting ef fo rts fo r 36 years, the total o perating kilometeraye o f the electrified rai lway s in China had been ov er 10000km。It may be divided into two stag es: ( 1) the fi rst 18 yea rs( 1961～ 1978) w ere be the practice and recog nition stag e; ( 2) the second 18 y ears( 1979～ 1996) w ere be the refo rm and dev elopment stage. During the celebratio n of the opera ting kilometerage over 10000km, the paper giv es a g eneral review of the dev elo ping procedure o f the elct ri fied rai lw ays, makes a basic ev alua tion fo r the existing electrified rai lw ays, and puts fo rw ard a prospect fo r further dev elopment o f the electrified railw ays in china.
