Abstract:Research purposes:For better design of the curbside alighting areas in front of major railway passenger stations, a two-step modeling methodology is proposed to the layout of the alighting areas. Namely the queue theory is used to estimate the quantities of alighting passages macroscopically and a traffic simulation model is used for the details of layout microscopically.
Research conclusions:With the M/M/N queue theory, the quantities of the alighting passages are estimated and the parameters are effectively calculated macroscopically, including the average queue length and waiting time. With the traffic simulation model built by the VISSIM software, the layout details such as lane assignment are determined. The model supports both two -dimensional and three-dimensional visual evaluation through graphical interface and animation. Moreover, the output data such as average speed and delay are used for quantitative comparison between the different schemes. The estimation also can be made whether the design can meet future traffic demand or not. The application of this method in the new Shenzhen Railway Station demonstrates that this method has the visual and quantitative features.
