Abstract:The optimal selection of route alignment for high speed railway is determined mainly by the geometric route design concerned with topography,urban and environment characteristics,while the environmental impact assessment is absolutely necessary. The optimal route alignment is selected based on the considerations of the factors on the separation of residential regions,environment,geologic technology,geometric design ,etc. The geographic information system (GIS) and the map overlap method arc introduced briefly,and the particular procedures of the environmental impact assessment (EIA)and the optimal selection of route alignment arc introduced in detail in this paper. At the same time,several foreign practical examples for applying GIS in route selection arc proposed,which prove the superiority of applying GIS as an auxiliary decision tool for optimal selection of route alignment. It provides a rapid multicriteria evaluation of route alignment,having potential value in application scope.
