Abstract The guard rail plays an important role of ensuring the vehicle passing through the turnout zone successfully. Based on a vehicle/turnout spatial interaction model, setting the No.12 speed-raised single-way turnout as an example, a method which the flangeway clearance and the wheel-rail dynamical clearance are considered, is presented in this paper to calculate the lateral impact force acting on the guard rail, and the dynamic responses of guard rail are simulated while the vehicle passing through the turnout zone.
