Abstract This paper outlines the process and efficiency of applying remote sensing technique in the geological survey during construction of Vanning-Kunming Railway. Because the remote sensing was only used in the surveying period in the past time, this practice is the first time for applying remote sensing during construction, and therefore is a break-through of the usage of remote sensing. The paper describes firstly the geomorphology and the sketch of geology along the railway. According to the requirements of the construction authority, the interpretation of fault-related structures was carried on the whole railway by using the Landsat TM images. White-black images were used for the geological interpretation of main tunnels, karst areas and the locality of Badu Bridge. Aerial photos taken in different times were applied to dynamic analysis of mud-rock flow valleys in the Duanjia River drainage area. The paper also lists the comparisons between the suggestions of remote sensing interpretation and the testifying results of construction in some segments of the railway. It can be seen from the list that most results of the remote sensing interpretation are correct. Finally, this paper deduces some conclusions and puts forward that it is beneficial to apply objectively and considerately the remote sensing technique in the construction. Meanwhile, the paper points out that the application of remote sensing technique does not mean may be applied anywhere.
