Abstract As swell rock has more complex qualities,no unified criterion is made in its distin?guishing and classifying. Based on the analyses of indexes such as maximum expansion mea-surement, critical expansion force, free expansion rate, drying saturated moisture absorption rate and so on,which show the expansion characteristic of swell rock, a preliminary method and judgement criterion on sedimentary mashed swell rock’s distinguishing and classifying is proposed in this paper.
