Abstract Abstract ： Research purposes ： Modem tramcar is approved recently because of green and high fashion, but there is a gap between expectations of large traffic flow and effect of actual application, which becomes the main obstacle of its development. Through the analyses of traffic situation and traffic demand of northwest area of Lanzhou, this paper researches on the comprehensive adaptability to build modern tramcar system of northwest area of Lanzhou. It is expected that the research conclusion would become classic case of integrated plan on urban transport system, and applied conditions of modern tramcar is presented clearly. Research conclusions ： ( 1 ) Modern tramcar is suitable for the urban transport requirements for medium - sized passenger flows, longer distances and connection of several urban transportations. (2) It will focus on development of residential and commercial on the northwest area of Lanzhou, but there is single means of transportation, therefore, a new transportation is needed urgently. (3) There are many advantages to build modern tramcar along the Yellow River on this area , for example , higher efficiency , lower construction cost , improving urban landscape and so on , which can meet the area traffic demand perfectly.
