Abstract Abstract :Research purposes: Tunnel;ling in a potential gas outburst section exhibits high safety risk. The determination method of safe rock thickness has become a key technical issue to avoid construction risk and improve construction efficiency. At present, the determination of safe rock thickness mostly depends on experience with more randomness,so
it should be further studied and improved combining geotechnical theory with construction practice.
Research conclusions :( 1) According to the theoretical geotechnical analysis, numerical simulation research for similar
projects, and combining the gas outburst prevention practice in existing tunnels, a simple calculation method of
minimum safe rock thickness for preventing gas outburst is proposed. The method is proposed by taking gas pressure and
engineering geological conditions as the representative indexes. (2) By using several typical engineering examples, the
feasibility of the calculation method is verified. (3 ) The research results will play a direct guiding role in ensuring the
tunnel construction safety and improving the construction progress in potential gas outburst zones, which can provide
important reference for scientific determining the safety rock thickness in potential gas outburst zones.
